Further details just released from R&V:

On Sunday 17th April there will be a charity concert at the Civic Hall in Stratford-upon-Avon to raise money to help children and families affected by the recent Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Rogues and Vagabonds are organising a Bring and Sing semi-staged concert performance of what is perhaps Gilbert and Sullivan’s most popular operetta The Mikado. Anyone who would like to come along and sing is invited to participate as chorus members, to enjoy a day of music-making and to raise money for the cause. No previous knowledge or experience needed. For singers who register before 6.00 p.m. on Friday 15th April the cost will be £12.00 (£8.00 for concessions)

Co-director of Rogues and Vagabonds Amanda Laidler said “amidst all the horrific pictures emerging from Japan, one story particularly moved me … that of a classroom in an elementary school where children had been waiting for several days for someone to come and collect them ………. No-one knew if their parents were even alive to come to fetch them.”

All profits from the concert will be donated to Save the Children’s Japan Emergency Fund.

Principals appearing in the concert will include Solihull based opera singer Gaynor Keeble. Gaynor has kindly agreed to sing the part of Katisha, a role she has sung in the Jonathan Miller production at English National Opera. Yum Yum will be sung by Amy Cate Walsh. Amy has sung the role for both Spa Opera and Stratford Gilbert and Sullivan Society. Amy is now studying music at York University. Nanki Poo will be sung by Ian Page, who sang the role in Spa Opera's production with Amy. Ian has most recently sung The Beast in Beauty and the Beast for Knowle Operatic society. Pitti Sing will be performed by Phoebe Jeanes, a music student at Birmingham. The Mikado will be sung by John Kiefert, John is a regular soloist across the Midlands, notably with Midland Opera in Birmingham. Carl Donohue is travelling up from the Home Counties to take on the role of Koko. Carl has sung Gilbert and Sullivan with both D'Oyle Carte and Carl Rosa Opera companies.

Musical Director Andrew Holtom is well-placed to assemble an orchestra for this event. As well as playing piano and organ, Andrew is in demand as a timpanist and percussionist and plays for a number of Midlands Orchestras. He looks forward to the challenge of staging this concert in a day.

Further information about the event can be found at www.randv.org.uk. Organisers would be pleased to hear from anyone who would like to support this event in any way.
